Telangana Sets New Power peak Demand Record at 16,506 MW
Electricity Demand Continues to Surge Across Sectors
Hyderabad, February 26, 2025: Telangana has once again recorded an all-time high in power consumption, with electricity demand soaring to 16,506 megawatts (MW) at 8:30 AM on Tuesday. This surpasses the previous record of 16,412 MW set on February 21. The state has been witnessing a continuous rise in power demand, with new peaks expected in the coming weeks.
Steady Rise in Power Consumption
For the past week, Telangana’s daily electricity demand has consistently exceeded 16,000 MW, with daily consumption crossing 300 million units (MU). On February 21, the state recorded a usage of 313.36 MU, and on Tuesday, February 25, consumption slightly increased to 313.373 MU.

Factors Driving the Surge
Experts attribute the rising power consumption to multiple factors:
- Agricultural Demand: With 70 lakh acres under Yasangi (Rabi) cultivation, including 55 lakh acres of paddy and over 7 lakh acres of maize, farmers are increasingly relying on groundwater. The state has 29 lakh borewells in operation, leading to higher electricity consumption for irrigation.
- Rising Temperatures: The increasing intensity of summer has led to greater usage of air conditioners, fans, and cooling appliances in urban areas.
- Industrial Growth: Heavy electricity usage by industries is further contributing to the surge in demand.

Electricity Demand Trends
Telangana has been experiencing record-breaking power demand throughout February. The highest recorded demands in recent days include:
- February 21: 16,412 MW (313.36 MU consumed)
- February 22: 16,287 MW (308.50 MU consumed)
- February 20: 16,289 MW (310.47 MU consumed)
- February 19: 16,140 MW (307.63 MU consumed)
The demand has consistently stayed above 14,000 MW since the beginning of February, and experts predict that new records may be set in March as agricultural and domestic consumption continue to rise.
With power consumption reaching unprecedented levels, the state’s electricity infrastructure is under increasing pressure. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure uninterrupted power supply across sectors.
