Indian Railways RPF Joins CEIR Portal to Track and Recover Lost Mobile Phones
In a major step towards enhancing passenger security, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has successfully onboarded the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). This nationwide initiative aims to help railway passengers track and recover lost or stolen mobile phones efficiently.
CEIR Portal: A Game-Changer for Lost Mobile Recovery
The CEIR portal is a digital platform designed by the DoT to manage lost or stolen mobile phones by blocking their IMEI numbers, preventing illegal resale, and enabling real-time tracking. Following a successful pilot project in the Northeast Frontier Railway, the initiative was officially launched across Indian Railways on Thursday.
At the inauguration and training program, RPF Director General Manoj Yadava emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating:
“The collaboration of RPF with the Department of Telecommunication for operating the CEIR portal marks a significant milestone in railway security. By leveraging digital technology, we aim to provide passengers with a transparent and effective mechanism to recover their lost or missing mobile phones. This strengthens law enforcement efforts and fosters greater trust among railway commuters.”
How RPF Will Help Passengers Using CEIR
With this integration, RPF officers will now be able to block lost mobile phones using their IMEI numbers, rendering them unusable. This deters theft and illegal resale while enabling faster recovery.
Railway passengers can report lost or stolen phones through:
- Rail Madad platform (Online or by dialing 139)
- CEIR portal (For those who choose not to file an FIR)
The Zonal Cyber Cells of RPF will register complaints on the CEIR portal, ensuring immediate IMEI blocking. If the lost phone is later detected with a new SIM card, the user will be advised to return it to the nearest RPF post. Owners can reclaim their devices by presenting valid documents. If the device is not returned, an FIR can be filed, and local police will handle further action.
RPF’s Track Record in Passenger Security
The RPF has a strong record in recovering passenger property. Under its Operation Amanat, it has successfully returned misplaced or lost belongings worth ₹84.03 crore to over 1.15 lakh passengers between January 2024 and February 2025.
The integration of the CEIR portal is expected to further boost railway security, ensuring the safe return of stolen or misplaced mobile phones. With nationwide implementation, Indian Railways is taking a significant step toward enhancing digital security and passenger trust.
