Land Rover Unveils Defender OCTA Black Edition Amid Record Sales and Financial Surge
Coventry, UK – July 5, 2025
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled the much-anticipated Defender OCTA Black Edition, a bold new addition to its luxury SUV lineup. The launch comes as the British automaker celebrates record-breaking sales and financial performance, fueled by unprecedented global demand for its Range Rover and Defender models.
Unveiled on July 4, the Defender OCTA Black Edition is described by JLR as a “stealthier, more aggressive” version of its flagship performance SUV. It features a deep Narvik Black finish—the darkest in the Defender palette—and over 30 exterior components styled in Gloss or Satin Black. Quad exhaust tips, blacked-out skid plates, and rugged tow eyes contribute to its striking aesthetic.
Under the hood, the Black Edition is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 engine producing 635 horsepower, enabling it to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds—making it the most powerful Defender ever built. The model is priced from £145,300, while the exclusive Edition One variant starts at £160,800. Optional extras, including a Matte Protective Film, further elevate the SUV’s design and durability.

Record-Breaking Year for JLR
The launch of the OCTA Black Edition caps off a banner year for JLR. For the financial year ending March 31, 2024 (FY24), the company reported record revenues of £29 billion, marking a 27% increase from the previous year. The fourth quarter alone delivered £7.9 billion in revenue—up 11% year-on-year—with profit before tax and exceptional items reaching £2.2 billion, the highest since FY15. Fourth quarter profits stood at £661 million.
This growth was driven largely by the surging popularity of the Range Rover and Defender, which together accounted for 76% of JLR’s 133,000-unit order book at the close of FY24. Defender emerged as JLR’s top-selling model, with 114,646 units sold globally, a 32% year-on-year increase. Range Rover sales rose 30% to 70,400 units, while Range Rover Sport sales saw a remarkable 78% growth.

Regional performance was led by North America, where wholesale volumes jumped 44%, followed by a 6% rise in Europe. This came despite a 38% drop in sales in China, highlighting JLR’s strength in Western markets. Retail sales in Q3 FY25 reached 106,334 units, indicating sustained consumer enthusiasm.
Vision for the Future: Electrification and Innovation
Central to JLR’s success is its ambitious Reimagine Strategy, which emphasizes luxury, technology, and sustainability. The company has pledged £15 billion over five years to accelerate its electrification roadmap. Plans are underway to launch six fully electric models across the Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery brands by 2030.
The upcoming Range Rover Electric, due later this year, has already attracted more than 57,000 customers to its waiting list. Supporting this transition is a strategic collaboration with Agratas, which includes the development of a £4 billion gigafactory in Somerset, UK. In parallel, JLR has trained 20,000 employees in EV and digital skills, with 95% of retail partner technicians now certified in EV servicing.

A Commitment to Sustainable Luxury
JLR is also making sustainability a pillar of its luxury ethos. The company has committed to achieving carbon net zero across its supply chain, products, and operations by 2039. Interior innovations include the use of Kvadrat materials, which integrate fabric made from 53 recycled plastic bottles, and Ultrafabrics PU, a premium, lower-carbon alternative to traditional leather.
CEO Adrian Mardell praised the company’s strong trajectory, noting:
“Our record Q3 revenue and the best EBIT margin in a decade reflect the strength of our brands and our commitment to delivering exceptional vehicles. The Defender OCTA Black Edition and the upcoming Range Rover Electric are testaments to our vision of blending cutting-edge technology with timeless luxury.”
Financial Resilience and Strategic Outlook
Looking ahead, JLR is targeting an EBIT margin of at least 8.5% and aims to become net debt-free by the end of FY25. A record £2.3 billion in free cash flow for FY24 has reinforced its financial position and supported ongoing investments in innovation and expansion.
As JLR continues to redefine the luxury SUV market, the Defender OCTA Black Edition stands as a bold emblem of the company’s direction—combining performance, luxury, and sustainability in a single, compelling package.
