Tragic Truck Accident Leaves 10 Dead, 3 Injured in Mirzapur

Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, August 22, 2025 – A horrific road accident in the Kachhawa area of Mirzapur district claimed the lives of 10 construction workers and left three others critically injured in the early hours of Friday. The incident occurred around 1:00 AM on GT Road, near the Mirzamurad–Kachhawa border, when a speeding truck rammed into a tractor-trolley carrying laborers.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhinandan, the tractor-trolley was ferrying 13 daily-wage workers back to their homes in Mirzamurad, Varanasi, after completing a roof construction job in Bhadohi’s Aurai area. The truck, reportedly out of control, slammed into the rear of the trolley, leaving it mangled beyond recognition.

By the time locals and Kachhawa police reached the spot, 10 of the laborers had succumbed to their injuries. The three survivors were rushed to the Trauma Centre at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), where their condition remains critical.

Police have seized the truck involved in the crash. While initial reports suggest the driver may have lost control due to speeding or fatigue, investigations are underway to establish the exact cause. Authorities are also probing whether the driver fled the scene, as no arrest has yet been confirmed.

The victims, mostly residents of Mirzamurad and nearby areas, were returning home after a day’s hard work. “It was a heartbreaking sight. These men were just trying to get back to their families. The vehicle was completely crushed,” recalled Ramesh Yadav, a local who joined the rescue efforts.

The tragedy has once again highlighted safety concerns on GT Road, a busy stretch notorious for reckless driving by heavy vehicles. Activists and residents have repeatedly raised alarm over poor traffic regulation and dangerous road conditions. Data from Uttar Pradesh Police shows that more than 20,000 road accidents were reported across the state in 2024, many involving trucks and buses on major highways.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured. He also announced immediate relief measures for the victims’ families, with the district administration preparing ex-gratia assistance.

Meanwhile, police have stepped up patrolling in the accident-prone stretch and appealed to the public to share any information regarding the truck driver.

This devastating incident has sparked fresh calls for stricter enforcement of road safety rules, particularly on highways passing through rural and semi-urban regions. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on securing justice for the victims and extending support to their grieving families.
