Horticultural University Distributes Free Chicks to SC, ST and Koya Farmers in Mulugu

Mulugu, September 8: The Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTHU) has launched the second phase of its free chicken distribution programme aimed at providing additional income opportunities for farmers belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Koya communities.

The programme was rolled out in Kondaparthi village of Tadvai mandal, Mulugu district, which has been adopted by His Excellency, the Governor of Telangana. As part of the initiative, the university distributed Sonali breed chicks to beneficiary families. The first phase of the programme was earlier conducted in Mahabubabad district.

University Vice Chancellor Dr. Danda Raji Reddy said that the project is being implemented under the SC Sub-Plan funds allocated to the university, with a view to improving the livelihoods of disadvantaged farming families.

Explaining the details, Dr. J. China, Dean of Horticulture, said that each family received 10 chicks (2 male and 8 female), aged six weeks. In total, 150 SC and ST families and 60 Koya families benefited from this phase of the programme.

“These Sonali breed chicks typically gain weight up to 2–3 kg within 60 days. From the second month onwards, the hens will begin laying eggs. This means that farmers can earn sustainable income from both egg production and sale of chicken meat. The scheme has been specially designed to improve the living standards of rural families,” Dr. China said.

The university has also roped in local veterinary officers and agricultural scientists to provide continuous guidance, including best practices in poultry rearing and precautionary measures to ensure healthy growth of the birds.

Officials further added that the scheme will be expanded to more districts across Telangana in the coming months. Farmers welcomed the initiative, stating that it would not only support household nutrition but also enhance economic stability for marginalized communities.
