Chennai, May 31: The last rites of Mohini Mani, mother of Tamil cinema star Ajith Kumar, were performed in Chennai on Sunday in the presence of family members, relatives, film personalities and well-wishers.
Mohini Mani, aged 84, passed away on Saturday following age-related ailments. She had been residing at the family home in Palavakkam and was reportedly undergoing treatment for health complications associated with old age in recent days.
Her demise has sparked an outpouring of grief from the Tamil film industry, political leaders and Ajith Kumar’s vast fan base across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
Ajith Kumar, one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated actors and an accomplished international car racer, was in Dubai when he received news of his mother’s passing. The actor immediately returned to Chennai on Saturday night to be with his family during the difficult time.
The loss comes less than three years after the passing of his father, P. Subramaniam, who died in 2023 following a prolonged illness. The death of Mohini Mani marks another significant personal tragedy for the actor and his family.
Among those who paid their respects was Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who visited Ajith Kumar’s residence in Palavakkam and personally conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family. The Chief Minister spent time with family members and expressed sympathy over their loss.
Several prominent personalities from the Tamil film industry also visited the residence to offer their condolences. Veteran actor and politician R. Sarathkumar, actor Nassar and actress Trisha Krishnan were among those who paid their respects and comforted the family.
The funeral procession carrying Mohini Mani’s mortal remains began from Injambakkam and proceeded to the Besant Nagar Crematorium. Ajith Kumar and family members accompanied the hearse as mourners gathered along the route to pay their final respects.
At the crematorium, Ajith Kumar performed the final rites in accordance with family traditions. Relatives, close friends and members of the film fraternity attended the solemn ceremony.
