Indian-born technology executive and entrepreneur Sivaramakrishnan “Soma” Somasegar has been honoured in the United States House of Representatives for his outstanding contributions to the technology industry, entrepreneurship, venture capital, and community service.

Paying tribute on the House floor, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene praised Somasegar as “an incredible technologist, entrepreneur, leader, and friend in our community,” highlighting his decades-long impact on the American technology ecosystem.

Born and raised in southern India, Somasegar moved to the United States to pursue higher education at Louisiana State University. He joined Microsoft Corporation in 1989 and went on to become one of the key figures behind the development of Windows NT, a landmark operating system that played a crucial role in the company’s growth.

According to DelBene, Somasegar’s exceptional leadership abilities, dedication, and work ethic helped him rise through the ranks at Microsoft, eventually serving as Senior Vice President until his retirement from the company in 2015.

“I had the joy of getting to know him during our time at Microsoft together,” DelBene said. “His infectious smile and warm presence brought energy to every room he entered.”

Following his successful career at Microsoft, Somasegar joined Madrona Venture Group as a Managing Director. In this role, he mentored entrepreneurs, invested in emerging technology companies, and played a significant role in strengthening the innovation ecosystem across the Pacific Northwest.

DelBene noted that Somasegar “guided countless startups and helped strengthen our region’s innovation ecosystem,” underscoring his influence beyond corporate leadership.

Apart from technology and venture investing, Somasegar was deeply involved in community initiatives and sports development. As a co-founder of the Seattle Orcas franchise, he helped bring professional cricket to the Pacific Northwest, contributing to the sport’s growing popularity among diverse communities, particularly the expanding South Asian population in the United States.

The Congresswoman also highlighted Somasegar’s commitment to social causes, describing him as a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment and a supporter of organisations dedicated to expanding opportunities and promoting equity.

A significant part of the congressional tribute focused on Somasegar’s devotion to his family. DelBene said his wife Akila and their two daughters remained the centre of his life and accomplishments.

“He spoke of them often with great admiration, gratitude, and boundless pride,” she said. “Everything he accomplished was grounded in love for them. To know Soma was to know how much they shaped him, supported him, and inspired him.”

Calling on fellow lawmakers to celebrate his legacy, DelBene said Somasegar’s family, friends, colleagues, and the broader technology community would continue to cherish his kindness, leadership, and wisdom for generations.

Somasegar’s journey from southern India to becoming a senior executive at Microsoft, a leading venture capitalist, and a champion of professional cricket in America reflects the growing influence of the Indian diaspora in the United States.

His career also mirrors the broader success story of Indian-origin professionals who have played a transformative role in shaping Silicon Valley, the American technology industry, and the global innovation economy over the past several decades.

As a technologist, investor, mentor, and community leader, Soma Somasegar’s contributions continue to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals on both sides of the globe.
