Qatar secured a landmark result at the FIFA World Cup on Saturday, earning their first-ever point on foreign soil after a dramatic stoppage-time goal rescued a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in a gripping group-stage encounter.

The Swiss looked set to claim all three points after striker Breel Embolo converted a penalty in the 17th minute, but Qatar stunned their European opponents deep into added time when veteran defender Boualem Khoukhi headed home a crucial equaliser.

Switzerland dominated large spells of the match and created numerous scoring opportunities, finishing with 25 attempts on goal. Dan Ndoye caused constant problems for the Qatari defence in the first half, while Michel Aebischer came agonisingly close to doubling the lead when his effort was cleared off the line just before halftime.

The opening goal came after Mahmoud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler inside the penalty area. Embolo stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give Switzerland a deserved lead.

Despite being under pressure for much of the contest, Qatar remained dangerous on the counterattack. Edmilson Junior nearly capitalised on a defensive error by Manuel Akanji in the second minute but was denied by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. The winger also tested Kobel again shortly before the break.

The intensity dropped slightly in the second half, though Switzerland continued to create chances. Juan Vargas and Embolo both missed opportunities to put the game beyond Qatar’s reach, and those missed chances ultimately proved costly.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Homam Ahmed delivered an inviting cross from the left flank. Khoukhi rose highest at the far post and powered a header past Kobel, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Qatar players and supporters.

The match also marked a significant milestone for Switzerland, as experienced campaigners Ricardo Rodriguez and Granit Xhaka made their joint-record 13th FIFA World Cup appearances for the national team.

While Switzerland were left frustrated after failing to convert their dominance into victory, Qatar celebrated a historic result that keeps their World Cup hopes alive and adds a memorable chapter to the nation’s football history.
