The cricketing world came together to celebrate the illustrious career of New Zealand batting legend Kane Williamson after the former Black Caps captain announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 16-year journey at the highest level.
Widely regarded as one of the finest batters of his generation, Williamson leaves the international stage as New Zealand’s highest run-scorer across all formats, amassing 19,346 runs in 378 matches, including 48 centuries and six double centuries.
Tributes poured in from across the globe, led by former India captain Virat Kohli, who shared an emotional message reflecting on his long-standing friendship and rivalry with Williamson.
“From an opponent to a friend over the years. It’s been a pleasure watching you bat and compete against you over so many years, but more than that, I value our friendship and shared perspectives on the game and beyond,” Kohli wrote on social media.
“I continue to cherish every time we speak or meet. Wishing you nothing but the best always, brother. You’ve done your bit, you deserve to enjoy all of it now and put your feet up. Well done, mate, life’s only just begun,” he added.
International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah also congratulated Williamson on a career marked by consistency, humility, and leadership.
“Congratulations to Kane Williamson on an exceptional international career built on class, humility, and outstanding leadership. Your achievements as the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 Player of the Tournament and the captain of New Zealand’s historic ICC World Test Championship 2021 triumph will remain etched in cricketing history,” Shah said.
He further wished Williamson success and fulfilment in the next chapter of his life.
Former Australian opener David Warner also paid a heartfelt tribute to his longtime friend and rival, praising Williamson not only for his cricketing achievements but also for his character and sportsmanship.
“Kano, it’s been an absolute privilege to play both alongside you and against you over the years. The runs, the records, and the achievements speak for themselves, but what has always stood out most to me is the person behind it all,” Warner wrote.
“You’ve been one of the genuine good blokes of world cricket — humble, respectful, and someone who played the game in the right spirit every single time you walked onto the field.”
Williamson’s retirement marks the end of an era for New Zealand cricket. Throughout his career, he was admired not only for his elegant batting but also for his calm demeanour, tactical brilliance, and exemplary conduct on and off the field.
The 35-year-old played a pivotal role in transforming New Zealand into one of the most respected teams in world cricket. Under his leadership, the Black Caps reached the final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and captured their first major ICC title by winning the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021.
Williamson was named Player of the Tournament at the 2019 World Cup after scoring 578 runs and guiding New Zealand to a dramatic final against England, a match remembered as one of the greatest in cricket history.
Over the years, Williamson earned widespread admiration for his ability to perform under pressure while maintaining the highest standards of sportsmanship. His leadership style, built on humility and composure, made him one of the most respected figures in international cricket.
As tributes continue to pour in from teammates, opponents, and fans around the world, Kane Williamson departs international cricket as a true ambassador of the game and one of New Zealand’s greatest-ever sporting icons.
While his international career has come to an end, his legacy as a world-class batter, inspirational captain, and consummate gentleman of cricket will endure for generations to come.
