California, June 16: A US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert, killing all eight people on board in one of the deadliest military aviation accidents in recent years.
According to officials, the aircraft went down at approximately 11:20 a.m. local time on Monday while conducting a routine test mission. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site, but initial assessments indicated that the accident was not survivable.
Confirming the tragedy, Colonel James Hayes said, “We lost eight great Americans,” adding that those on board included a mix of military personnel, government civilians and government contractors.
Following the crash, Edwards Air Force Base temporarily closed its airfield, diverted inbound aircraft and suspended non-commercial visitor access to focus on emergency response and recovery operations. Officials are continuing efforts to account for all personnel involved.
The aircraft was assigned to the base’s testing program and was reportedly involved in radar modernization activities. Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the crash, though no official cause has yet been identified. The investigation is expected to take several months.
The B-52 Stratofortress, manufactured by Boeing, has been a cornerstone of the US Air Force’s strategic bomber fleet since the 1950s. Designed to carry both conventional and nuclear weapons, the long-range bomber remains a key component of America’s military capabilities and has recently been used in operations in the Middle East.
Witnesses reported seeing a massive plume of black smoke rising from the crash site, visible for miles across the desert landscape. Images from the scene showed a large charred area where the aircraft came down and was engulfed in flames.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of their families. The US Air Force has pledged a full investigation into the incident as officials seek to determine what caused the fatal crash.
