Evian, France, June 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Evian, France, on Tuesday to participate in the G7 Summit, marking the third and final leg of his two-nation tour. The visit underscores India’s growing global influence and its expanding role in addressing key international challenges.
Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Modi was formally welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who has invited India to participate in this year’s summit. India’s presence at the G7 reflects its increasing importance in shaping global discussions on economic growth, security, sustainability and development.
During the summit, Prime Minister Modi will take part in a high-level working session themed “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity.” The session will bring together leaders from G7 nations, partner countries and major international institutions, including the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening international cooperation, addressing global economic uncertainties, enhancing multilateral partnerships and advancing sustainable development goals.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
A key highlight of the visit will be PM Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump on June 17. The White House has confirmed the bilateral engagement, which is expected to focus on strengthening strategic ties and reviewing progress in negotiations for a proposed India-US trade agreement.
According to a senior US administration official, the discussions could pave the way for the first formal trade pact between India and the United States, potentially boosting economic cooperation and bilateral trade between the two countries.
Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi will attend a gala dinner hosted by President Macron, providing an opportunity for informal interactions with global leaders attending the summit.
This year marks India’s 13th participation in the G7 Summit and Prime Minister Modi’s seventh consecutive attendance at the prestigious gathering of major world economies.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that India’s regular participation in G7 summits reflects growing international recognition of the country’s contributions toward addressing global challenges related to peace, security, development and environmental sustainability.
The ministry also highlighted India’s consistent efforts to champion the interests of developing nations through platforms such as the G20 and the Voice of Global South Summit, ensuring that the priorities and aspirations of the Global South remain at the forefront of international policymaking.
As global leaders gather in France amid evolving geopolitical and economic challenges, India is expected to play a significant role in shaping discussions and building consensus on critical international issues.
