Chennai, July 13: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and head coach Stephen Fleming have mutually agreed to part ways after an illustrious 18-year association, bringing an end to one of the longest and most successful coaching tenures in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The franchise announced the decision on Monday, stating that it was reached after discussions between Fleming and the CSK management. The former New Zealand captain was part of the franchise from its inception in 2008 as a player before taking over as head coach in 2009.

Under Fleming’s leadership, Chennai Super Kings established themselves as one of the most consistent and successful teams in franchise cricket. During his tenure, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League Twenty20 trophies, while qualifying for the IPL playoffs a record 12 times and reaching the final on 10 occasions.

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath paid tribute to Fleming’s immense contribution to the franchise, describing him as the driving force behind the team’s coaching setup for nearly two decades.

“Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. He helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the Super Kings family and our legacy,” she said.

CSK Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan highlighted Fleming’s role in building the team’s culture, saying his impact extended far beyond trophies and victories.

“From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture based on consistency, humility, and teamwork. His ability to bring out the best in every individual has been one of his greatest strengths,” he said.

Reflecting on his departure, Fleming expressed gratitude to the franchise and its supporters, calling his time with CSK the defining chapter of his coaching career.

“Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will continue to support the team in the years ahead,” Fleming said.

Fleming’s departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Chennai Super Kings’ history. His leadership, tactical acumen, and calm approach played a pivotal role in transforming CSK into one of the IPL’s most decorated and respected franchises.
