Atlanta, July 17: England midfielder Jude Bellingham has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to supporters following the Three Lions’ dramatic exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026, urging fans to remain united despite the disappointment of missing out on the final.
England’s hopes of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966 were dashed on Thursday after defending champions Argentina staged a stunning late comeback to secure a 2-1 victory in the semi-final at Atlanta Stadium.
Anthony Gordon put England ahead in the 55th minute, and Thomas Tuchel’s side appeared to be on course for a historic victory. However, Argentina turned the match around in the closing stages, with Enzo Fernandez equalising in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send the reigning champions into the final against Spain.
Bellingham’s Emotional Message
A day after the heartbreaking defeat, Bellingham shared an emotional message on Instagram, thanking supporters both in England and those who travelled to the United States to cheer on the team.
“I was really struggling to find the right words for yesterday and the last few weeks, but this pretty much hits the nail on the head from our driver in Kansas. Thank you for the unbelievable support from back home and to those who spent their hard-earned money to travel to America and get behind us,” Bellingham wrote.
He also urged fans to keep believing in the national team.
“Don’t let the unity and love we’ve seen in our country end with this campaign. When we’re together, we can achieve big things… And we will! Love yous!” he added.
Outstanding Tournament
Despite England’s semi-final exit, Bellingham enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign and emerged as one of manager Thomas Tuchel’s standout performers.
The Real Madrid midfielder finished the tournament with seven goal contributions, including a match-winning brace in England’s quarter-final victory over Norway, which secured a place in the last four. Earlier in the competition, he also scored twice against Mexico in the Round of 16.
England had defeated DR Congo, Mexico, and Norway in the knockout rounds, raising hopes of ending a 60-year wait for a second FIFA World Cup title.
However, Argentina’s late comeback ensured England’s long wait for World Cup glory continues.
The Three Lions will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff against France, while Argentina will face Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Monday.
