Hyderabad, August 3: In a landmark achievement for public healthcare in India, the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, has successfully completed 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries in less than three years, setting a new benchmark in the adoption of advanced medical technology in government healthcare institutions.
The Telangana government described the milestone as a transformative step toward making world-class robotic surgery accessible to all sections of society. More than 90 per cent of these surgeries were performed free of cost under government-supported healthcare schemes such as Aarogyasri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), ensuring that economically disadvantaged patients receive advanced surgical care without financial burden.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who serves as the President of the Governing Council of NIMS, congratulated NIMS Director and Senior Professor of Urology & Renal Transplantation, Dr. Rahul Devraj, along with the Departments of Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Surgical Oncology, Anaesthesiology, Nursing Services, Operation Theatre staff, and other supporting teams for achieving the historic milestone.
The Chief Minister said the achievement reflects NIMS’ unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and equitable healthcare delivery. He noted that integrating robotic technology into routine clinical practice has significantly improved surgical precision, reduced postoperative pain and blood loss, shortened hospital stays, and enabled faster patient recovery.
According to NIMS, the Department of Urology performed 590 robotic surgeries, followed by 248 surgeries by the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and 162 surgeries by the Department of Surgical Oncology. These procedures covered a broad range of complex cases, including urological, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, colorectal, gynaecological, and oncological surgeries.
The Department of Urology carried out robotic procedures on patients ranging from one year of age to over 80 years, including highly complex surgeries such as radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, robotic renal transplantation, urogynecological surgeries, Boari flap reconstruction, ureteric reimplantation, pyeloplasty, including paediatric cases, and several advanced reconstructive procedures.
Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha congratulated the doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff of NIMS for achieving the rare milestone. He said the accomplishment reflects the Telangana government’s commitment to making advanced healthcare services affordable and accessible to every citizen.
The achievement further strengthens Telangana’s position as a leader in public healthcare innovation and demonstrates how cutting-edge robotic surgical technology can be successfully integrated into a government-run tertiary care institution while ensuring equitable access for patients across all economic backgrounds.
