New Delhi, September 17: Tata Sons has reappointed N. Chandrasekaran as its Executive Chairman for another five-year term, reversing his earlier decision not to seek an extension. The move is likely to intensify the ongoing differences between the Tata Sons board and Tata Trusts, the group holding company’s largest shareholder.

Chandrasekaran, who has served as Tata Sons chairman since 2017, had announced last month that he would not seek reappointment after his current term ends in February. The decision followed the failure of the Tata Sons board to reach a consensus on extending his tenure.

However, at its September 17, 2026 meeting, the Tata Sons board requested Chandrasekaran to reconsider his decision. He agreed, following which the board voted by majority to reappoint him for a further five-year term.

According to Tata Sons, Tata Trusts had earlier passed a unanimous resolution on July 28, 2025, appreciating Chandrasekaran’s stewardship of the Tata Group and resolving that he be reappointed as Executive Chairman for another five years after the completion of his existing term.

The reappointment has nevertheless sparked a fresh dispute. Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, which holds a 66% stake in Tata Sons, reportedly described the reappointment as “illegal.” The disagreement has raised questions over the governance and future leadership of the Tata Group.

Tata Stocks Rally

The announcement also had an immediate impact on the stock market. Several listed Tata Group companies witnessed strong buying interest during Thursday’s trading session.

Tata Group stocks rallied by up to 14% in afternoon trading following the announcement of Chandrasekaran’s reappointment and developments surrounding the proposed IPO of Tata Sons.

The latest development puts Chandrasekaran at the centre of a potentially significant leadership and governance tussle within one of India’s largest business groups, even as the Tata Sons IPO remains a closely watched development.
