India’s population has reached a historic high, surpassing China with a population of over 1.42 billion people, according to the United Nations Population Division. The latest report, titled ‘State of World Population Report-2023’, highlights India’s position as the world’s most populous country, marking the first time since 1950 that India has topped the list. The report also reveals that China’s population stands at 1.4257 billion, 2.9 million less than India’s.
The report projects that India’s population will continue to grow, reaching 1.668 billion by 2050. Currently, 25% of India’s population is under the age of 14, with 68% aged between 15 and 64 years and 7% above 65 years. Additionally, there are 254 million young people aged between 15 and 24 years.

While China’s population growth has slowed significantly, India’s population continues to grow at an average rate of 1.2% since 2011. The previous ten years saw a growth rate of 1.7%. The report also notes that India and China account for one-third of the world’s population.
Although the rapid population increase has raised concerns among some, UNFPA India representative Andrea Woznar believes that population growth should be seen as a sign of progress, development, individual rights, and more opportunities.

The lack of accurate information from India and China regarding their population makes it challenging to determine the exact date of this record, according to UN Population Division officials. The last census in India was conducted in 2011, and a new census was supposed to take place in 2021, but it was delayed due to COVID-19.
