Google Assistant to Get Webpage Summarization Feature, Reveals Beta Version
Google is reportedly working on a new feature that will enable users to utilize Google Assistant to summarize webpages. The upcoming ‘Summarise’ option was spotted as a work-in-progress in the latest Google app beta (version 14.29). When browsing the web, users will have the option to invoke the assistant and request a summary of the page, simply by saying, “Summarise this”.
The feature is expected to be available when using Chrome directly or when an app opens a webpage in a Custom Tab. However, it remains uncertain whether this option will be exclusive to Pixel devices upon release.
The introduction of the Summarise option marks one of the first instances of modern generative artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features for Google Assistant, enhancing its capabilities.
In recent updates, Google also introduced two new voices, Lime and Indigo, for its virtual assistant software application.
On a separate note, Google reportedly “deprioritised” its plans to launch an AI-powered mobile chatbot application called ‘Bubble Characters’, specially designed for Gen Z users. The app was intended to feature interactive digital characters engaging in “human-like” conversations and taking action. However, development work on the app ceased after being in progress since the fourth quarter of 2021.
