New Delhi, July 31: Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress President, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being indifferent to the plight of violence-hit Manipur, alleging that the Centre is “clueless and rudderless” in handling the situation.

In a tweet, Kharge stated, “While Manipur faced turmoil, the Modi Government appeared indifferent. Our INDIA alliance MPs, after visiting the state, heard heart-wrenching stories of pain from the people. They engaged with all communities.”

According to the report, over 50,000 people, including 10,000 innocent children, are currently residing in relief camps with inadequate facilities, especially for women. The camps are facing shortages of essential items like medicines and food. The violence has also had a severe impact on the region’s economy, with children unable to attend school and farmers halting their farming activities, leading to financial losses and psychological hardships. The divide between communities in the region is also a matter of concern.

Kharge further criticized Prime Minister Modi for seemingly prioritizing poll rallies, self-PR train inaugurations, and attending BJP meetings over addressing the suffering of the people in Manipur or working towards resolving inter-community issues. He pointed out that the absence of a comprehensive statement in Parliament indicates a lack of direction from the Modi Government in handling the Manipur situation.

The remarks from Kharge come after the 21 MPs of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) returned from Manipur and briefed the floor leaders about the current situation in the state.

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic clashes since May 3, resulting in numerous casualties and forcing thousands to seek refuge in relief camps.

The Congress-led INDIA bloc has demanded a detailed statement from the Prime Minister in both Houses of Parliament regarding the violence in Manipur, and they are also seeking a discussion on the matter.
