Hyderabad, August 18:

The much-anticipated steel bridge flyover stretching from Indira Park to VST Junction, designed to alleviate traffic congestion at key intersections within the city, is set to be inaugurated by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao on August 19th.

Costing Rs 450 crore, the 2.63-km-long flyover is a vital component of the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) undertaken by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). It comprises four lanes and traverses NTR Stadium, Ashok Nagar X Road junction, RTC X Road, and VST Junction.

This flyover will provide essential respite from traffic bottlenecks at prominent junctions such as Indira Park, Ashok Nagar, RTC X Roads, VST Junction, Azamabad, and Baghlingampally junction. Notably, the flyover boasts a distinctive architectural feat, spanning over the Metro rail and positioned 90 feet above ground level. Metro trains will pass between the two roads on the flyover.

Distinguished by its use of steel viaducts and girders, the flyover’s construction was expedited compared to traditional concrete counterparts, employing around 17,000 metric tonnes of steel. The piers were fabricated on leased land and directly affixed to the site.

Originally commenced in December 2017 with a targeted completion date of December 2019, the project encountered delays due to factors like land acquisition hurdles, utility relocations, and the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns. GHMC officials noted that 48 out of the 72 proposed works under SRDP have been successfully accomplished so far.
