Movie Review: “Rules Ranjan” (2023)

Rating: 2.25/5

“Rules Ranjan” featuring Kiran Abbavaram attempts to blend elements of love, romance, and action into a narrative that unfolds with mixed results. Directed by Rathinam Krishna and produced by Muralikrishna under the banner of Star Light Entertainment, the film sets out to engage both youth and family audiences but falls short in various aspects.

The story revolves around Manoranjan (Kiran Abbavaram), a middle-class young man who secures a job in a software company in Mumbai. Struggling with the language barrier in a predominantly Hindi-speaking environment, he earns the nickname ‘Rules Ranjan’ through his relentless dedication and rapid career advancements. However, a chance encounter with his college crush, Sana (Neha Shetty), rekindles memories of unrequited love, prompting him to reflect on the shallowness of life without love.

While the premise holds promise, the execution leaves much to be desired. The film’s comedic elements lack believability and fail to leave a lasting impact. The songs also fail to capture the audience’s attention, save for the track “Sammohanuda.” Furthermore, the introduction of new characters like Hyper Adi, Sudarshan, Viva Harsha, Ajay, Subbaraju, and Naginidu in the second half does little to enhance the overall plot, leading to a lack of depth and development in their roles.

Despite a strong mass image, Kiran Abbavaram’s portrayal of a software engineer leaves audiences wanting more entertainment. The film struggles to engage viewers, especially in the absence of compelling interactions between the lead characters. The love track and emotional depth of the story receive insufficient attention, leaving Neha Shetty’s romantic scenes without the expected impact.

Amrish’s music, except for a few exceptions, fails to leave a lasting impression, with “Sammohanuda” being a notable standout. Duleep Kumar’s cinematography and Prasad’s editing provide passable contributions to the film.

In conclusion, “Rules Ranjan” represents a departure from Kiran Abbavaram’s typical mass-oriented content. While the film attempts to infuse confusion comedy in the climax, it falls short of achieving the desired level of humor and entertainment. The film could have capitalized on its potential better, especially given Kiran Abbavaram’s energetic performance. Ultimately, it seems that the movie, despite its efforts, did not fully leverage the actor’s strengths.

This movie may cater more to those who appreciate Kiran Abbavaram’s previous work, but it may not resonate as strongly with a broader audience.
