Indian shooter Varun Tomar secures a Paris Olympics quota spot by clinching gold in the 10m men’s air pistol event at the Asian Qualifiers on Monday. In the final, the 20-year-old athlete scored 239.6, surpassing compatriot Arjun Cheema, who won the silver with a score of 237.3.

The top two shooters in each category at the Jakarta Asian Olympic Qualifying event, also serving as the 2024 Asia Shooting Championship, will earn quotas for their respective countries if eligible and their nations haven’t secured their full allocation.

India’s campaign at the event kicks off with success as the men’s 10m air pistol team, comprised of Varun Tomar, Arjun, and Ujjawal Malik, secures gold with a combined score of 1740. Iran and Korea claim silver and bronze, respectively.

India has already obtained 13 Paris Olympic quota places in Shooting, with eight in rifle, three in pistol, and two in shotgun events. Sarabjot Singh, Manu Bhaker, and Anish Bhanwala are among the Indian pistol shooters who have previously secured quotas.

A country can acquire a maximum of 24 quotas, distributed equally among rifle, pistol, and shotgun events. Indian shooters aim to surpass the 15 quotas achieved ahead of the previous Tokyo Olympics.
