The second season of the Women’s Premier League kicked off in Bengaluru on Friday, featuring an opening match between defending champions Mumbai Indians and runners-up Delhi Capitals. This edition aims to provide a broader platform for emerging domestic talents in women’s cricket.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah expressed his gratitude and excitement for the commencement of the league on social media platform X, stating, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude as we commence on a new journey today with the start of Women’s Premier League Season 2.”
Shah further highlighted the league’s significance, emphasizing its role in promoting women’s cricket and camaraderie among players. He extended thanks to all contributors for turning the vision of the league into reality.
Titled #TataWPL – Cricket Ka Queendom, the tournament spans 25 days, featuring five teams competing in 22 matches. The league format remains unchanged, with matches scheduled in Bengaluru and New Delhi. Each team will play against the others twice in the group stage, leading to the final showdown in New Delhi on March 17.
Mumbai Indians, winners of the inaugural edition, are considered favorites once again after their thrilling victory over Delhi Capitals last year. The league promises an exciting showcase of talent and spirited competition, with teams vying for the coveted title.
