Telangana Government Introduces “Gruha Jyothi Scheme” Offering Free Electricity to Domestic Consumers
“Gruha Jyothi Scheme Implementation Guidelines
Hyderabad February 27
In a significant move aimed at easing the financial burden on domestic households, the Telangana government has unveiled the “Gruha Jyothi Scheme.” Effective immediately, this initiative entitles eligible households to receive free electricity for up to 200 units per month.
Under the scheme’s guidelines, households seeking to avail themselves of this benefit must ensure their applications are processed through the Praja Palana portal or approved channels. Crucially, applicants must provide details of a valid Food Security Card (white ration card) linked with their Aadhaar card, along with their domestic service connection number.
Monthly billing will reflect a zero charge for eligible households consuming up to 200 units, offering substantial relief to families grappling with electricity expenses. The directive to Discoms (Distribution Companies) to maintain the consumer’s name in their billing system underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Furthermore, Discoms are obligated to furnish subsidy details to the government by the 20th of the subsequent month, ensuring timely reimbursement and efficient management of the scheme’s finances.
In a bid to ensure widespread participation and seamless implementation, the government has outlined a clear process for consumers to follow. While households already registered during PrajaPalana will automatically qualify for the scheme, those yet to apply can do so through designated channels, including MPDO offices, Municipal Commissioner’s offices, or GHMC Circle offices.
Notably, consumers in the latter category will not face coercive measures for bill recovery pending verification of their eligibility. Once verified, eligible consumers will receive revised bills reflecting the benefits of the Gruha Jyothi Scheme.
This comprehensive directive underscores the government’s steadfast commitment to prioritizing the welfare of its citizens by providing essential services and alleviating financial strain, particularly on domestic consumers in Telangana.
