New Zealand Implements Stricter Visa Rules Amid Surging Immigration
In response to overwhelming migration figures, New Zealand announces significant changes to its visa regulations, particularly focusing on employment visas. With a staggering 1.73 lakh people migrating to the country in 2023 alone, concerns over the influx have prompted immediate action from the government.
The new measures include stricter requirements for English language proficiency, minimum skills for work visas, and work experience criteria, particularly targeting non-skilled workers. Additionally, New Zealand plans to reduce the period of continuous local residence for low-skilled workers from 5 years to 3 years.
According to Erica Stanford, the Minister of Immigration, the emphasis will now be on attracting highly skilled immigrants, such as secondary teachers, while ensuring opportunities for local residents in jobs where skills are abundant.
The move comes amidst a population surge, with New Zealand’s population reaching 51 lakhs, leading to inflationary pressures. Neighboring Australia has also taken similar steps, deciding to halve its immigrant intake over the next two years.
