Independent candidate Pandit Keshav Dev campaigns with sandal garland in Aligarh

In an unconventional election campaign move, independent candidate Pandit Keshav Dev, contesting from the Aligarh Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, has been seen wearing a garland made of sandals around his neck. Assigned the symbol of a pair of sandals by the Election Commission, Keshav Dev has chosen this unique approach to stand out and ensure voters remember his symbol. The video of his campaign has gone viral, showing him adorned with the sandal garland and accompanied by supporters holding banners reading ‘Samarthit Bhrastachara Santhi Sena’ (Anti-corruption Army).

The Aligarh constituency is set to go to polls on April 26 as part of the second phase of voting. In the previous 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Satish Kumar Gautam emerged victorious with a significant margin of 2,25,000 votes. With 80 Lok Sabha seats, Uttar Pradesh holds considerable electoral importance, and the elections in the state will span across seven phases.
