Congress Announces Candidates for Telangana Legislative Council Biennial Elections

New Delhi, March 9, 2025 – The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has officially announced its candidates for the upcoming biennial elections to the Telangana Legislative Council, which will be conducted through voting by the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the proposal for the candidature of the following three party nominees:

  1. Addanki Dayakar
  2. Kethavath Shankar Naik
  3. Vijayashanti

In a strategic move, the Congress has also decided to allot one seat to the Communist Party of India (CPI) as part of its alliance strategy in Telangana.

The announcement was made by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal in an official statement released on Sunday. The decision reflects Congress’ commitment to strengthening its presence in the Telangana Legislative Council while also maintaining ties with its allies.

Congress Eyes Stronger Representation in Telangana Council

With the biennial elections approaching, the selection of candidates is seen as a crucial step in Congress’ efforts to consolidate its influence in Telangana politics.

  • Addanki Dayakar, a senior leader, has been an active voice in state politics and is known for his grassroots connect.
  • Kethavath Shankar Naik, a prominent leader from the tribal community, brings experience and a strong support base.
  • Vijayashanti, a former MP and actress-turned-politician, has been a vocal leader advocating for Telangana’s development.

The Congress leadership believes that this mix of experienced and influential candidates will enhance the party’s position in the state’s legislative process.

The Telangana Legislative Council elections are being keenly watched as they will impact the political equations within the state assembly. The Congress’ decision to share a seat with CPI signals its broader strategy of alliances to counter the oppositions Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Telangana.

With this announcement, the Congress has set the stage for a competitive electoral battle, with its candidates expected to file their nominations soon.
