Electricity Demand Peaks in Telangana Amid Scorching Sun
Record-breaking consumption of electricity has been reported in Telangana Hyderabad, with demand soaring despite expectations of a decrease in April. The surge in electricity usage, attributed to the relentless heat, has seen an increase of 1600 megawatts above normal levels. On April 30 alone, consumption reached a staggering 228 million units, a stark contrast to the 155.9 million units recorded on the same day last year.
The surge in demand, fueled by increased use of fans, coolers, and air conditioners to combat the scorching temperatures, has put pressure on the state’s power grid. Although agricultural activities like Yasangi cultivation and rice harvesting have largely concluded, domestic consumption remains high, especially in urban areas.
Despite production in the state falling short at less than 100 million units, the government has taken proactive measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply without resorting to power cuts. With only 97 million units produced daily within the state, the shortfall is being met through imports and purchases from other states. This strategy, coupled with continuous electricity supply and efficient utilization of resources, has averted any disruptions in power delivery.

The unprecedented increase in electricity demand is evident in the statistics, with peak demand exceeding 10,000 to 11,000 megawatts, compared to just 7,000 to 8,000 megawatts last year. This surge, amounting to an additional 3,000 megawatts per day, underscores the magnitude of the challenge faced by authorities in meeting the rising energy needs.

In Greater Hyderabad alone, the demand has surged by 1614 megawatts, reaching a maximum of 4214 MW on a recent Tuesday. This marks a significant increase of nearly 62 percent compared to the previous year. Even on holidays, such as Sundays, electricity consumption remains high, with Greater Hyderabad recording 83.04 million units on a recent Sunday, a 53.52 percent increase from the same period last year.
As the scorching sun continues to drive up electricity demand, authorities are working diligently to ensure sufficient supply and mitigate any potential disruptions in service.
