Hyderabad, June 23, 2024: Prohibitory orders have been imposed for a week in Miyapur and Chandanagar police station limits in Greater Hyderabad following a significant trespassing incident where hundreds attempted to encroach on government land.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty issued the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code. These orders, effective from 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 23, will remain in force until 11 p.m. on June 29.
The Police Commissioner stated that the prohibitory orders were necessary due to the current law and order situation, aiming to prevent danger to human life and safety, disturbances to public tranquility, riots, affrays, or obstruction to lawful duties.
The orders prohibit gatherings of five or more people. Additionally, individuals who do not normally reside or work in the area are restricted from entering the limits of the two police stations. Violators of these orders will face prosecution.
On Saturday, hundreds of people trespassed into 525 acres of land owned by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). The squatters set up temporary shelters and demanded that the government allocate them the land. HMDA officials and the police intervened, resulting in a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Some encroachers retaliated by pelting stones, injuring a few police personnel.
The land in question had recently been handed over to HMDA by the revenue authorities, despite a pending court case regarding its ownership. People from various parts of Hyderabad and neighboring districts gathered at the site, demanding house allotments. They claimed they had been denied housing under the double-bedroom housing scheme of the previous government and sought house sites from the current administration.
