The Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS), located in Palvancha, Bhadradri Kothagudem district, has demolished eight of its cooling towers in a phased operation. This marks the end of an era for the plant, which had been supplying electricity to the then united Andhra Pradesh since its establishment.

Historical Context and Closure

KTPS was an essential power provider with its cooling towers built between 1965 and 1978 across its A, B, and C power stations, generating a total of 720 MW. However, the plant ceased operations on April 11, 2020, for maintenance, which ultimately led to the decision to dismantle the old structures.

Demolition Details

The demolition process began on January 18, 2023, following a tender issued by Genco. HR Commercial, a Jaipur-based company, won the contract valued at Rs. 485 crores. The demolition plan included the use of the implosion technique, with the project executed in three phases:

  1. Phase One: Four cooling towers at ‘A’ station, each 102 meters high.
  2. Phase Two: The remaining four cooling towers, each 115 meters high.

The comprehensive demolition plan required meticulous preparation, involving 30 staff members over nearly a month. The project was carried out with all necessary permissions from the district collector and Transco.

Conclusion

The successful demolition of these old cooling towers paves the way for KTPS to repurpose the site for future projects, marking a significant transition in the region’s energy landscape.
