Telangana Government Tables Caste Survey 2024 Report in Assembly

Hyderabad, Feb 6: The Telangana Government tabled the much-anticipated Caste Survey – 2024 report in the State Assembly on Tuesday. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy presented the report and highlighted its significance in addressing the long-standing lack of official data on weaker sections across the country.

In his speech, the Chief Minister pointed out that since 1931, no official enumeration of weaker sections has been conducted in India, and their details have been excluded from national census reports. This gap has posed significant challenges in implementing reservations for Backward Classes (BCs).

Revanth Reddy credited Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for initiating this movement, stating that Gandhi had promised a caste census during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. “Soon after Congress came to power, the people’s government fulfilled this promise by adopting a resolution to conduct the caste census in the Assembly,” he said.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the official process for the caste census was completed in record time. Enumerators meticulously collected data from every village and tanda, with 150 houses designated as one unit for data collection. A total of 76,000 data entry operators worked tirelessly for 36 days to process the information. The government allocated ₹160 crore for the exercise, ensuring strict protocols were followed throughout the process.

The report was tabled in the Assembly following approval from the State Cabinet. Highlighting the importance of the findings, Revanth Reddy stated that BCs constitute 56% of Telangana’s population. “This decision was made to give due respect to the BC community,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister concluded by congratulating all officials and staff involved in preparing the Caste Survey – 2024 report, noting that it could serve as a model for the entire country.
