Hyderabad on High Alert:

Hyderabad, August 12, 2025: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall across Hyderabad from Wednesday, August 13, to Friday, August 15.

According to the advisory, northern parts of the city, including Medchal–Malkajgiri district and the Cyberabad region, are expected to face the worst impact, with rainfall accumulation projected between 10–15 cm, and in isolated pockets, possibly touching 20 cm. Other parts of the city are also expected to receive widespread heavy downpours, raising the risk of flooding and severe waterlogging.

HYDRAA Commissioner has urged residents to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take maximum precautions during the three-day weather event. People living in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to move to safer locations or be prepared for possible evacuation if the situation worsens.

IMD Confirms Intense Rainfall Forecast

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed HYDRAA’s prediction, attributing the heavy rains to a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a well-marked system. The IMD has warned of:

  • Urban flooding in multiple areas of Hyderabad
  • Severe traffic disruptions due to waterlogging
  • Localized flash floods in vulnerable neighborhoods

Government and Civic Bodies on Standby

The Telangana State Government has directed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), and other civic departments to be on round-the-clock alert. Emergency response teams, including National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) units, have been placed on standby.

HYDRAA teams will be patrolling high-risk zones, clearing drainage blockages, and monitoring the water levels of Musi River, Himayat Sagar, and Osman Sagar. Reservoir authorities have been instructed to regulate outflows cautiously to prevent sudden flooding downstream.

Traffic and Safety Advisory

The Hyderabad Traffic Police have appealed to commuters to:

  • Plan travel in advance and use alternative routes
  • Avoid submerged or waterlogged roads
  • Follow official traffic diversions announced during the rains

Motorists are also being warned about the danger of driving through fast-flowing water, as even shallow currents can sweep away vehicles.

Citizens Urged to Stay Alert

HYDRA has advised residents to:

  • Stay updated with real-time weather alerts from HYDRAA and IMD
  • Keep emergency kits ready, including flashlights, power banks, and essential medicines
  • Ensure proper drainage around homes and workplaces to prevent water stagnation
  • Keep emergency helpline numbers handy — GHMC Disaster Control Room: 040-21111111 / 9000113667

Authorities have stressed that timely precautions and community cooperation will be crucial in minimizing damage and ensuring public safety during the upcoming spell of extreme weather.
