BRS Suspends MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha Amid Explosive Allegations on Kaleshwaram and Family Rift
Hyderabad, September 2, 2025 (02:21 PM IST): In a sensational political twist, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has suspended MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha from the party following her explosive allegations against senior leaders and rising friction within the influential Kalvakuntla family.
The decision, confirmed by party insiders, is said to have been taken during an emergency meeting convened by party president K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) at his Erravelli farmhouse on Monday night. The meeting was attended by senior leaders including K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) and T. Harish Rao, the prime figures in Kavitha’s accusations.

Kavitha’s Allegations Rock the Party
Kavitha, who returned from the United States on September 1, held a fiery press conference where she admitted that large-scale corruption had occurred in the much-debated Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. While absolving her father KCR of wrongdoing, she squarely blamed former Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao and ex-MP J. Santosh Rao of “amassing massive wealth” through the project.
She went further, accusing them of deceiving KCR, colluding with present Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and weakening BRS from within. “They have betrayed my father and the party,” she charged, while also revealing that corruption in the project was the primary reason for Harish Rao’s removal from the Irrigation portfolio during BRS’s second term in power.

Rising Internal Friction and Kavitha’s Defiance
This is not the first time Kavitha has openly defied the party line. On May 23, she wrote a six-page letter to KCR criticizing BRS for adopting a “soft approach” towards the BJP, a move that created ripples within the cadre. Her latest press meet not only brought simmering tensions to the surface but also forced KCR to act swiftly to prevent further damage to the party’s unity.
Sources said Harish Rao strongly defended himself in the Erravelli meeting, denying Kavitha’s allegations, while several senior leaders pressed KCR to suspend her immediately. Within hours, the suspension was announced internally, though an official statement is awaited.

Kaleshwaram Under Spotlight Again
Kavitha’s remarks have reignited the storm around the Kaleshwaram project. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has already ordered a CBI probe into alleged irregularities, calling the project “the biggest corruption scandal in Telangana’s history.” Kavitha questioned BRS’s muted response to the probe and demanded that the party call for a Telangana bandh in protest.
Political observers say her statements have placed KCR in a difficult position — balancing his family ties with the survival of his party, which has already faced electoral setbacks.

Speculation on Kavitha’s Next Move
Following her suspension, speculation is rife that Kavitha may launch a new political outfit to consolidate her base. This comes after her recent ouster from the Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham (TBGKS), where she served as honorary president for years. Interestingly, she was later elected as the honorary president of the Hindustan Mazdoor Sangh (HMS), a move seen as her attempt to stay politically relevant.
Analysts say a new party led by Kavitha could further fragment BRS’s vote base, especially among women and unionized labor groups where she enjoys influence.

Family Feud in Public Domain
The suspension also lays bare the deepening rift within the Kalvakuntla family, once projected as a monolithic force in Telangana politics. While KTR and Harish Rao are consolidating their leadership roles within BRS, Kavitha’s rebellion threatens to undo years of carefully built political strategy by KCR.
As the situation unfolds, one thing is certain — BRS has entered a turbulent phase where personal loyalties, political survival, and corruption charges are colliding head-on. The coming days will determine whether the party can weather this storm or face irreversible damage.
