Tehran, April 17: In a significant development easing global energy market concerns, Iran on Friday announced the full reopening of the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz to all commercial shipping, linking the move directly to the continuation of the ongoing ceasefire in Lebanon.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed that vessels are now permitted to transit the vital waterway, provided they comply with specific maritime protocols laid out by Iranian authorities.

โ€œIn accordance with the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, and through the coordinated route announced by the Islamic Republic of Iran Ports and Maritime Organization, the passage for all commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz will remain fully open for the duration of the ceasefire,โ€ Araghchi said in an official statement.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the worldโ€™s most critical maritime choke points, handles a substantial portion of global oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shipments. Recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East had heightened fears of disruptions to energy supply chains, triggering volatility in global markets.

Iranโ€™s decision is expected to bring immediate relief to international trade and energy sectors that had been bracing for potential shortages and price spikes. However, Tehran has imposed clear operational conditions, mandating that all vessels must strictly adhere to designated navigational corridors set by its Ports and Maritime Organization.

Officials indicated that continued access to the strait will remain dependent on the stability of the ceasefire in Lebanon, underscoring the fragile linkage between regional security dynamics and global trade flows.

The reopening marks a crucial step toward stabilising maritime operations in the Gulf region, though analysts caution that the situation remains sensitive and subject to geopolitical developments.
