On April 9th, 2023, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka, becoming the first Prime Minister to do so. He took to Twitter to share his experience, stating that he enjoyed the natural beauty of India and the diversity of wildlife. During his visit, Modi traveled about 20 kilometers within the reserve, donning a khaki pant, camouflage T-shirt, and sleeveless jacket.

In addition to his visit to the tiger reserve, the Prime Minister also visited the Theppakadu Elephant Camp, where he fed sugarcane to elephants named Boman and Belli. The two elephants were featured in the Oscar-winning documentary ‘Elephant Whisperers’, and were greeted by representatives, producers, directors, and caregivers who appeared in the film.

Modi had arrived in Mysore the previous night to inaugurate the Bandipura Tiger Sanctuary-Tiger Project Golden Festival, which is set to take place at the Karnataka Sarvatrika Vishwa Vidyalaya, Rachanagari on Sunday. The festival is being held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger.
