It’s not often that a 13-year-old achieves such a feat, but Lahiri Komaravelly of Rasoolpura has won the gold medal at the Under-15 Sailing Championship, held at the 2nd Shillong North East Regatta. Studying at Udbhav School and training at the YCH Sports Foundation, Lahiri’s victory is a remarkable achievement.
What’s more, Lahiri was awarded a prize of 50,000 rupees, which she revealed was equivalent to four months of her family’s income. At just 13 years old, Lahiri is now a proud contributor to her family’s finances.
Notably, sailors from the YCH Foundation won eight medals across four categories at the event, with Lahiri’s elder sister Deekshita finishing a close second and clinching the silver medal. The remaining sailors from the Foundation took home bronze medals.
In addition to Lahiri’s victory, Alekhya Coondoo of the Secunderabad Sailing Club secured the gold medal in the Mixed 420 Class.
The Shillong North East Regatta, held on the Umayam Lake in Meghalaya, has cemented the city’s status as a growing hub for sailing. This is the second invitational regatta to be conducted on the lake.
