Hyderabad, May 16: In response to the heat wave alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD-H), the Government of Telangana has released an advisory urging citizens to take necessary precautions. With temperatures expected to reach a scorching 42 degrees Celsius, the following do’s and don’ts have been reiterated to ensure the well-being of the people:

Do’s:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if not feeling thirsty. Homemade drinks like lemon water, buttermilk, and fruit juices with added salts are recommended. Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) can also be used.
  • Carry water while traveling.
  • Consume seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content.
  • Wear thin, loose cotton garments, preferably light-colored.
  • Cover the head with an umbrella, hat, cap, or towel when exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Wear shoes or chappals when going out in the sun.
  • Stay indoors in well-ventilated and cool places.
  • Block direct sunlight and heat waves by keeping windows and curtains closed during the day. Open them at night to allow cooler air in.
  • Limit outdoor activities to cooler times of the day, such as morning and evening.
  • Stay informed about the local weather by listening to the radio, watching TV, or reading newspapers. Check the latest updates on the India Meteorological Department (IMD) website.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid going out in the sun, especially between 12:00 noon and 03:00 pm.
  • Refrain from strenuous activities during the afternoon.
  • Avoid going barefoot.
  • Avoid cooking during peak summer hours and ensure adequate ventilation in the cooking area.
  • Steer clear of alcohol, tea, coffee, carbonated soft drinks, and sugary beverages, as they can lead to dehydration.
  • Avoid high-protein food and consume fresh meals.
  • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

Additionally, the advisory emphasizes the need to seek immediate medical attention from nearby government health facilities if any of the following danger signs are observed: altered mental state, hot and dry skin, body temperature of 40°C or higher, throbbing headache, anxiety, dizziness, muscle weakness or cramps, rapid heart rate, nausea, vomiting, or rapid shallow breathing.

As part of precautionary measures, the government has ensured the availability of special beds, intravenous fluids, and ORS sachets at all public health facilities, and ANMs/ASHAs/Anganwadi workers have been equipped to address any emergencies.
