Hyderabad, September 15, 2023 – In a momentous stride for medical education, Telangana inaugurated nine new medical colleges on Friday, marking a significant achievement in the healthcare sector. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao remotely unveiled these institutions from his official residence, Pragathi Bhavan.

This initiative has been dubbed a “white coat revolution” and sets Telangana apart as the state that has independently established the most medical colleges within a single year, all funded by the state government.

The newly opened medical colleges are situated in Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Khammam, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal, Rajanna Sircilla, Vikarabad, and Jangaon.

KCR emphasized that these new colleges, in conjunction with upgraded district hospitals, will significantly elevate medical education and tertiary healthcare services in the respective districts.

With the addition of these nine colleges, the tally of government medical colleges in Telangana now stands at 26. Furthermore, eight additional medical colleges are slated to commence operations in the academic year 2024-2025, making Telangana the first Indian state to have a government medical college in each of its districts.

KCR expressed pride in Telangana’s achievement of having the highest number of medical seats in India, with 22 seats per lakh population.

Highlighting various measures taken over the past nine years to enhance healthcare facilities in the state, KCR underscored that health and medical education have become areas where Telangana serves as a model for the entire nation.

He stated, “Once eight new government medical colleges become operational next year, the government and private medical colleges in Telangana together will produce 10,000 new doctors every year.” He pointed out that when Telangana was formed, the state had only 2,850 medical seats, which have now grown to 8,515.

KCR further stated, “When the state was being formed, some people expressed doubts on whether we can govern efficiently. In the last nine years, we have shown what we are capable of. The state has achieved all-round development. We have achieved remarkable progress in agriculture, irrigation, drinking water, power, health, education, and other sectors.”

He noted that in 2014, Telangana had just 15,000 beds in government hospitals, and those facilities lacked adequate medical infrastructure. Today, the state boasts 34,000 beds, and with six more hospitals currently under construction, this number will soon reach 50,000.

In the current academic year, Telangana accounted for 43 percent of the MBBS seats added nationwide. In 2014, the state had only five colleges, which included two in Hyderabad and one each in Warangal, Nizamabad, and Adilabad. Over the years, new colleges were established, and the trend continues with eight more colleges planned for the academic year 2024-2025.

These upcoming institutions will be located in Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, Mulugu, Warangal-Narsampet, Medak, Yadadri Bhongir, Rangareddy, and Medchal Malkajgiri.
