Thiruvananthapuram, September 24: K.G. George, the renowned filmmaker of Kerala, passed away at the age of 77 in an old age home located in Kakkanad, Kochi, on Sunday.
K.G. George was an iconic figure in the Malayalam film industry, known for his groundbreaking and challenging cinematic creations. His film, ‘Panchavadi Palam,’ remains a timeless political satire with a message still relevant today. The movie was not only a commercial success but also considered one of the finest productions in the history of Malayalam cinema.
Another notable work by K.G. George, ‘Irakal,’ is a crime thriller that bore uncanny resemblances to several real-life incidents that unfolded in Kerala, despite being made three decades ago.
His directorial skills brought out the best performances from acclaimed actors like Mammotty and Bharath Gopi in the film ‘Yavanika.’ ‘Lekhayude Maranam, oru Flashback,’ based on the mysterious death of a film heroine, was another critically acclaimed hit.
K.G. George was a highly respected figure in the Malayalam film industry, even though he directed only around 20 movies. He played a pivotal role in breaking down the boundaries between commercial and art cinema, always infusing his films with thought-provoking messages.
Throughout his career, George fearlessly tackled various subjects, including sex, politics, corruption, and crime. His work left a lasting impact and contributed to a cinematic revolution in the Malayalam film industry.
In recent years, George had been battling health issues following a stroke and had been residing at the Kakkanad old age home before his passing.
