Oslo, October 6: The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize has been bestowed upon Narges Mohammadi for her unwavering commitment to fighting the oppression of women in Iran and her relentless advocacy for human rights and freedom for all. The prestigious announcement was made by the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.

In a statement, the Institute underscored that this year’s Nobel Peace Prize also serves as a tribute to the hundreds of thousands of individuals who, over the past year, bravely protested against the discriminatory and oppressive policies of Iran’s theocratic regime, particularly those aimed at women.

The demonstrators’ slogan, “Woman – Life – Freedom,” aptly encapsulates the spirit of Narges Mohammadi’s dedicated work.

Although the list of nominees remained confidential this year, reports indicated that more than 350 individuals and groups were in contention for the prestigious honor.

Last year’s Nobel Peace Prize was jointly awarded to the Russian human rights group Memorial, Ukraine’s Center for Civil Liberties, and imprisoned Belarusian rights advocate Ales Bialiatski. Their recognition was attributed to their contributions to promoting peace amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Since its establishment in 1901, the Nobel Peace Prize has been conferred upon 110 individuals and 30 organizations. Notable recipients include Afghan campaigner Malala Yousafzai and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Additionally, some organizations have received the award multiple times, with the International Committee of the Red Cross earning it three times and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees being honored twice.
