Google has introduced its second screen “companion mode” to the Meet app on Android and iOS, expanding its functionality beyond the web version.

Companion Mode enables users to join Meet calls using in-room audio/video conferencing systems instead of their personal PCs. This feature was initially available only on the web but is now accessible on mobile devices.

In a blog post, Google announced, “Beginning today, you’ll be able to use companion mode with your Android and iOS devices.”

This mode offers a convenient, lightweight option for participating in meetings without relying on a laptop, making it ideal for settings where space for a laptop is limited.

With Companion Mode, users can access interactive features and controls while in a conference room or large meeting space. These include checking into the room for identification, sharing emoji reactions without disrupting the speaker, raising their hand to indicate a desire to speak, enabling captions for subtitles, and more.

In related news, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that Google One, the service offering additional storage for free services like Gmail, Drive, and Photos, has reached 100 million subscriptions. This milestone signifies the growing demand for storage solutions and access to enhanced features among users.
