Due to Rabi Cultivation and High Temperatures

HYDERABAD, FEBRUARY23
Electricity consumption has been on the rise in Telangana, with record consumption being observed this month. The demand for electricity has further increased due to the ongoing Rabi cultivation, resulting in a usage of 284 million units of electricity daily. In the past week, there has been a significant increase in electricity usage, with Gen Co producing less than 89 million units, and everything else being based on purchases.

The month of February has witnessed a peak demand for electricity, surpassing last year’s record. Experts predict that the demand may continue to increase in March, with a huge surge in agricultural consumption due to more than 26 lakh pump sets being used for Rabi cultivation. The peak demand is expected to soon cross 15,000 megawatts.

At the time of Telangana’s formation, there were 19.02 lakh agricultural electricity connections, which have now increased to over 26 lakh. Good rains in the past four years have led to an increase in cultivation and electricity consumption, with paddy being planted in about 53.08 lakh acres this Rabi. As a result, the demand for electricity is increasing day by day.

The electricity officials are facing difficulties in supplying the increasing demand for electricity due to the rise in Rabi cultivation. The daily production by Gen Co is less than 85 million units, with an additional 156 million units being purchased from central generating stations and 36 million units being purchased from the National Electricity Exchanges, costing hundreds of crores.

In conclusion, the increasing demand for electricity due to Rabi cultivation and the scorching summer temperatures has led to a record-breaking consumption of electricity in Telangana, with the peak demand predicted to cross 15,000 megawatts in March. The discoms are facing challenges to supply electricity to meet the rising demand.

These are the electricity demand records.
