Government of Telangana Identifies Fine Varieties of Paddy as “Sannaalu”

In a recent development, the Government of Telangana has issued an official notification identifying certain fine varieties of paddy cultivated by farmers in the state as “Sannaalu”. The notification, issued by the Agriculture and Cooperation Department, aims to categorize these varieties based on specific grain specifications.

Background and Process

The Director of Agriculture, Telangana, informed that a committee, constituted under a previous government order (GO Rt No. 464, dated 20.06.2024), has outlined the identification process for the fine varieties of paddy. The committee has submitted its proposals, leading to the issuance of this notification.

The following varieties have been designated as “Sannaalu” based on the committee’s recommendations:

Criteria for Designation

Additional varieties meeting the following grain specifications may also be designated as “Sannaalu”:

  1. Kernel length: Less than 6 mm
  2. Kernel length-to-breadth (L/B) ratio: More than 2.5
  3. Kernel breadth: Not more than 2 mm

These specifications are to be measured only when the grain moisture does not exceed 17%, following the Fair Average Quality (FAQ) parameters.

Equipment for Measurement

Procurement centers will be equipped with the following for measuring the kernel length and breadth:

  • Dial Micrometer
  • Standard moisture meter

Grievance Redressal

A committee constituted under the original government order will address any grievances raised by farmers, individuals, or companies regarding the inclusion or exclusion of varieties in the “Sannaalu” list.

The notification was issued by M. Raghunandan Rao, APC and Secretary to the Government of Telangana, ensuring transparency and precision in the classification of paddy varieties.
