Diwali 2025 Creates History: ₹5.4 Lakh Crore Shopping Frenzy Shatters All Records! šŸ’„

Hyderabad, October 22:
This year’s Diwali has turned into a record-breaking economic celebration, with India witnessing an unprecedented ₹5.4 lakh crore worth of purchases in goods and another ₹65,000 crore in services — marking a historic surge in consumer spending. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) announced that this year’s figures have outshone last year’s ₹4.25 lakh crore mark by a massive margin, reflecting the strongest festival economy ever seen in the country.

According to CAIT, the phenomenal boost came from heightened consumer enthusiasm, a rebound in market confidence, and a powerful push for ā€œVocal for Localā€ products. The festival also signaled a clear decline in dependence on foreign goods, with Chinese imports facing a setback of nearly ₹1.25 lakh crore as Indian shoppers turned to homegrown alternatives — from traditional lamps to modern electronics.

Top-Selling Sectors That Lit Up Diwali 2025

  • Gold and Silver: Dhanteras alone saw sales of ₹20,000 crore in gold and ₹2,500 crore in silver, making it the most lucrative day for jewellers nationwide.
  • Electronics and Appliances: Smartphones, smart TVs, washing machines, and other home gadgets flew off the shelves amid heavy festive discounts.
  • Jewellery and Apparel: Designer wear, ethnic fashion, and premium jewellery recorded a sharp rise in footfall and online orders.
  • Home Decor & Furniture: Urban consumers splurged on makeovers, turning Diwali into a ā€œhome upgradeā€ festival.
  • Sweets & Kitchenware: Mithai shops and cookware brands reported sales doubling compared to last year.

Firecracker Industry Booms Beyond Expectations

Sivakasi — India’s fireworks hub in Tamil Nadu — reported record-breaking sales of ₹7,000 crore, a ₹1,000 crore jump from last year. The town’s 1,000-odd factories now supply nearly 90% of India’s firecrackers, employing thousands of workers.

In the national capital, despite regulatory curbs, Delhi’s firecracker sales surged by 40%, reaching ₹500 crore. Supreme Court approval of green crackers further fueled the demand. However, the celebrations pushed Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) to 442 (Hazardous) late Sunday night. On a positive note, satellite data showed a 77% reduction in stubble burning incidents across Punjab and Haryana compared to last year — offering some environmental relief.

Traders and Economists Cheer the Festive Boom

ā€œThis Diwali has been extraordinary — consumer confidence is at its peak, and every sector, from gold to groceries, has seen explosive growth,ā€ said Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary-General of CAIT. He added that the festive shopping momentum is likely to carry forward into the upcoming wedding season, expected to generate another ₹6 lakh crore in business across hospitality, jewellery, fashion, and event management sectors.

Economists note that this spending spree signals a resilient domestic economy, driven by rising disposable incomes, stable inflation, and a renewed focus on indigenous products. The Diwali 2025 sales record is now being hailed as a landmark moment in India’s post-pandemic consumption story.

A Festival Turned Economic Phenomenon

From bustling bazaars to booming online marketplaces, Diwali 2025 has proved that India’s festival spirit is unmatched — not just in joy and light, but also in economic firepower. With over ₹6 lakh crore of total spending expected when wedding festivities kick in, this Diwali isn’t just a celebration — it’s a blockbuster that redefined India’s market pulse.
