Locals Appeal to MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig to Save Polluted Pedda Cheruvu

Residents of Ibrahim Bagh and surrounding colonies have appealed to MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig to take urgent action to protect Pedda Cheruvu, the city’s largest natural lake in the area, which is facing alarming levels of pollution due to unchecked sewage inflow.
Pedda Cheruvu, spread across nearly 70 acres, has long served as an ecological asset, supporting diverse flora, fauna, and migratory birds. However, in recent years, the lake has been deteriorating rapidly due to continuous discharge of untreated sewage from Manikonda, Puppalguda, Alkapur Township, and OU Colony, residents said.
During their meeting with the MLC, locals expressed deep concern over the destruction of biodiversity, formation of thick layers of pollutants, and the intolerable foul smell emanating from the lake. The unhygienic conditions, they said, are posing serious health risks to thousands of families living nearby.
Residents urged the MLC to immediately intervene and ensure that all sewage lines entering the lake are plugged without delay. They demanded the establishment of a dedicated Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), regular lake cleaning, desilting, and a long-term lake rejuvenation plan to restore Pedda Cheruvu to its original state.
They warned that if the government does not act swiftly, the lake may soon reach an irreversible stage of ecological collapse. The residents stressed that protecting Pedda Cheruvu is not only an environmental issue but also a matter of public health and civic responsibility.
Locals including Perik Suresh, Vengal Reddy, Dayanand Patel, Sriram Reddy, Bhim Reddy, Rakesh Patel, Venkat, Srinivas Kalyan, David, Rangopal, Deepti, Saubhagya, and several others took part in submitting the representation.
