India’s Software Exports Soar in FY 2023-24: Karnataka Leads, Telangana Rises

New Delhi, June 29, 2025 – India’s software export sector continued its robust growth in the fiscal year 2023-24, with a total export value reaching Rs 17,48,141.66 lakh crores, as per the latest data. The industry, a key driver of the nation’s economy, showcased a diverse contribution across states, with Karnataka emerging as the undisputed leader, while Telangana made significant strides to secure the third spot.

Karnataka topped the charts with an impressive Rs 6,20,024.04 lakh crores in software exports, accounting for 35.47% of the national total. The state’s strength lies in its robust STPI contributions of Rs 4,09,095.04 lakh crores and SEZ exports of Rs 2,10,929.00 lakh crores, reinforcing Bengaluru’s status as India’s Silicon Valley. Maharashtra followed closely, contributing Rs 3,45,521.52 lakh crores (19.77%), with STPI and SEZ exports at Rs 1,83,847.52 lakh crores and Rs 1,61,674.00 lakh crores, respectively, highlighting Mumbai and Pune’s growing IT ecosystems.

Telangana claimed the third position with Rs 2,72,075.62 lakh crores, marking a 15.56% share of the total exports. The state’s balanced growth, with Rs 1,21,116.62 lakh crores from STPI and Rs 1,50,959.00 lakh crores from SEZ, underscores Hyderabad’s emergence as a key IT hub. Tamil Nadu secured the fourth spot with Rs 2,26,145.43 lakh crores (12.94%), driven by Rs 80,677.43 lakh crores from STPI and Rs 1,45,468.00 lakh crores from SEZ, reflecting Chennai’s industrial strength.

Haryana and Uttar Pradesh rounded out the top six, with exports of Rs 89,574.07 lakh crores (5.12%) and Rs 79,497.13 lakh crores (4.55%), respectively. While northern states like West Bengal (Rs 36,651.30 lakh crores) and Kerala (Rs 29,240.40 lakh crores) also made notable contributions, southern and western regions dominated the sector. Gujarat and Odisha recorded modest exports of Rs 14,926.20 lakh crores and Rs 12,955.87 lakh crores, respectively, indicating untapped potential in these areas.

The data reveals a concentration of IT exports in a few states, with Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu together accounting for over 83% of the total. Smaller contributors like Goa (Rs 259.45 lakh crores) and Bihar (Rs 0.74 lakh crores) highlight the uneven distribution, suggesting opportunities for growth in less-developed regions. The total STPI and SEZ contributions stood at Rs 9,43,312.66 lakh crores and Rs 8,04,829.00 lakh crores, respectively, reflecting the critical role of these zones in driving exports.

As India aims to strengthen its position in the global IT market, the FY 2023-24 figures underscore the need for balanced regional development to sustain this growth trajectory.
